One of the pleasure of shooting in The Palouse is the ability to gain some elevation, to gain perspective on the landscape. But, the inverse is ... true, with small dips in the road and valleys that provide an opportunity to see things at angles other than dead-on.

Nestled into the hills, where the North and South Forks of the Palouse River meet, Colfax offers "a special blend of small town living and rural lifestyles" (Colfax Chamber of Commerce). Colfax is known for its warm, neighborly atmosphere -- a quality that many attribute to its rich pioneer history and agricultural heritage. As the county seat, Colfax hosts an astonishing array of public services: including a fine hospital, flourishing schools, an extensive library, grocery stores, a golf course, dining establishments, and numerous recreational facilities.

As a service to Moscow, ID, Pullman, WA, and the surrounding Palouse area, PATH offers horseback riding opportunities for people with disabilities. Not only does PATH benefit the participants in the program and their families, but it ... offers opportunities for WSU and University of Idaho students as well as community members to interact with people with disabilities in a normative context as volunteers. PATH enlists the help of over 75 volunteers who lend their time and expertise to the program.

Once an extensive prairie composed of mid-length perennial grasses such as bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) and Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis), today virtually all of the Palouse Prairie is planted in agricultural crops. The native prairie is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the United States (Noss et al. 1995), as only a little over one percent of the original prairie still exists.

Roughskin newts are found in only a few ponds on the Palouse. They are quite toxic, and may have displaced other amphibians in the Pacific northwest. It is suspected that [R]oughskin newts in the Rocky Mountains and the Palouse bioregion are the result of introduction from west of the Cascades. Comparison of DNA from local and western newts should be made to determine their origin.

Since 1900, 94% of the grasslands and 97% of the wetlands in the Palouse ecoregion have been converted to crop, hay, or pasture lands. Approximately 63% of the lands in forest cover in 1900 are still forested, 9% are grass, and 7% are regenerating forestlands or shrublands. The remaining 21% of previously forested lands have been converted to agriculture or urban areas.
