The Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians is composed of several small groups of Indians who were living in the modern day Palm Springs area when the Agua Caliente Reservation was established by the United States Government in 1896. Archaeological research has shown that the Cahuilla have lived in the area for the past 350-500 years. The reservation occupies 32,000 acres (130 km²), of which 6,700 acres (27 km²) lie within the city limits, making the Agua Caliente band the city's largest landowner. The reservation land was originally composed of alternating squares of land laid out across the desert in a checkerboard pattern. The alternating, non-reservation squares, were provided by the United States Government to the Southern Pacific Railroad as an incentive to bring rail lines through the open desert. Tribal enrollment is currently estimated at between 296 and 365 people.

In the past, Palm Springs Regional Airport has historically been an issue of concern for the area's tourism-related businesses. The airport was unable to handle large jets, given the short length of its runway. Thus, few flights were available to markets other than Los Angeles, requiring visitors from outside Southern California to take a connecting flight either into Palm Springs or Ontario. Limited airline access to the market was a competitive disadvantage relative to markets such as Phoenix/Scottsdale, San Diego, and Las Vegas, particularly in attracting group meeting demand. Recent expansions have addressed some of these concerns... the high seasonality of the market is a deterrent for some airlines, which greatly decrease the number of scheduled flights in the off season. Following the events of September 11th, there were further reductions in scheduled flights into Palm Springs. Because of the challenges posed by the airport, the area’s hotels have had to rely more on markets within driving distance of Palm Springs. This phenomenon has paid off in the past few months as travelers, wary of flying, have chosen "drive-to" markets such as Palm Springs. With overall travel demand expected to increase in the next couple of years, along with relatively minimal increase in room supply, market occupancy is expected to remain in the low-to mid-60% range.

Long since doing its part in protecting the environment, Palm Springs has been utilizing the increasingly popular alternative source of energy, wind turbine generators, a type of windmill that produces electricity by harnessing the wind. Wind turbine generators are much less harmful to the environment than burning fossil fuels, but they do require average wind speeds of at least 21 km/h (13 mph). The largest of these windmills stands 150 feet tall with blades half the legend of a football field. The compartments at the top containing the generator, hub and gearbox weigh 30,000 to 45,000 pounds. A wind turbine's cost can range upwards to $300,000 and can produce 300 kilowatts an hour - the amount of electricity used by a typical household in a month. Almost all of the currently installed wind electric generation capacity is in California.
