Palm III, and all the following Palms, did not have the word "Pilot" in their name due to legal disputes. (Pilot was, and still is, a registered trademark for pens.) Palm III had an IR port, backlight, and flash memory. The latter allowed to upgrade Palm OS, or, with some external applications, to store programs or data in flash memory. It ran on two standard AAA batteries. It was able to retain enough energy for 10-15 minutes to prevent data erasure during battery replacement. It had 2 Megabytes of memory, large at the time, and used Palm OS 3.

A shared library on the Palm Pilot is not like one on most varieties of Unix. Whereas for Unix, shared libraries export a symbol table, and the operating system's dynamic loader maps calls based on their symbol name, for the Palm Pilot, shared libraries export a dispatch table. A dispatch table is basically a list of addresses of the functions in the library that can be called from other applications.

Hackmaster ($)-The easiest way to update the Palm Pilot is to create a hack, a small program designed to add some utility like a better finder program. There are a lot of hacks out there and this application helps manage them and integrate them into your Palm with less problems. It's shareware.
