Palm Computing was able to incorporate desktop compatibility into the PalmPilot™, a big breakthrough for this category. Using a docking station, with the push of one button the user could coordinate and back-up data stored on the organizer with a desktop PC. This enabled the user to update files in a personal information manager program that handled appointments and contacts.

Double calendar entries can appear in Lotus Notes or on the Palm Pilot. This usually occurs after you have received a new computer (or received a Palm that previously belonged to another person). The first time you synchronize following one of these events, the Custom settings for HotSync should be changed to Desktop overwrites the handheld.

Similar hand-helds have been around for over 10 years now, but unlike its predecessors, the PalmPilot (or Palm) allows you to work either from the Palm's interface or from the PC desktop. This allows all lengthy data entry to be performed on the PC, with only slight updates and confirmations necessary on the Palm. Thus, in combination with the Palm Desktop or another Personal Information Manager (PIM), the Palm frees you from your desktop or a static, paper version of your agenda.
