built 655 days ago
Palau is a group of islands in the North Pacific Ocean, southeast of the Philippines. The terrain varies geologically from the high, mountainous main island of Babelthuap to low, coral islands usually fringed by large barrier reefs. The Rock Islands are one of the main attractions, drawing divers and sightseers alike. More than 200 jungle-topped islands of limestone stretch south of the capital city, Koror, with bases narrower than their tops from having been worn away by tidal action. North of these islands, the coral atolls of Ngeruangel and Kayangel are situated, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (ca. 70) are situated to the west of the main island group. Forests on the islands thrive with very little soil, but are slow to regenate if removed. Forests are ... home to endemic species such as the Rock Island Palm Tree, found solely on the Rock Islands and nowhere else on earth. The reefs surrounding the Rock Islands are in places thousands of years old, and are an extremely important food source of fish and invertebrates.
