Painters apply paint, stain, varnish, and other finishes to buildings and other structures. They choose the right paint or finish for the surface to be covered, taking into account durability, ease of handling, method of application, and customers’ wishes. Painters first prepare the surfaces to be covered, so that the paint will adhere properly. This may require removing the old coat of paint by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or water and abrasive blasting. Painters ... wash walls and trim to remove dirt and grease, fill nail holes and cracks, sandpaper rough spots, and brush off dust. On new surfaces, they apply a primer or sealer to prepare the surface for the finish coat.

Painters prepare and paint an incredibly diverse array of surfaces. There are three main areas of the industry: industrial (steel structures like ship tanks and bridges), commercial (everything from small businesses to skyscrapers), and residential (homes and small apartments). Painters need to be skilled with a wide variety of hand and power tools, depending on the type of surface preparation and coating required. Glaziers prepare and install various types of glass, mirrors, metal framing, and glass and aluminum doors and entrances in on buildings at residential, commercial, and industrial sites. Work is often performed with other trades-people on new construction, remodeling and repair jobs. Hand and power tools are used during the preparation and insulation process.

Painters’ Hall was given to the Company in 1532 by Alderman Sir John Browne, Sergeant Painter to King Henry VIII, but was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666. It is alleged that King Charles II rested in the Hall with his entourage whilst touring the City during the conflagration and a painted window in the Court Room in the Hall is to commemorate this event.

Painters and paperhangers sometimes work with materials that are hazardous or toxic, such as when they are required to remove lead-based paints. In the most dangerous situations, painters work in a sealed self-contained suit to prevent inhalation of or contact with hazardous materials. Although workers are subject to falls from ladders, the occupation is not as hazardous as some other construction occupations.
