At its most basic level, Painkiller is a technologically advanced first-person shooter with an emphasis on twitch-based reflex action and a lot of chaotic, almost mindless but thrilling carnage. The trick, which is the same one Serious Sam knew how to play off of all too well, is to engage players with eye candy, overwhelm them with numbers, scare them with constant near death situations, and thrill them with sparkling effects and a solid feel. What will hopefully make this better than Sam or at least of some worth on its own right? Physics, design, feel.

All joking aside, Painkiller does have its stand-outs, placing itself properly on the timeline of gaming evolution. As one would expect, with the ever progressing state of technology, and the boundaries imposed by next-generation games alone, Painkiller looks substantially better than any former game of this type � again, Serious Sam being the most recent comparable. People Can Fly could have taken the tried and true approach of licensing an engine, such as the Unreal Warfare engine, Quake III engine (Die already Quake III engine! Die!), or even the most logical choice, the Serious engine. But that would have been 1) Too easy and 2) Quite lacking. Now before you say "the hell you say!

Painkiller is a first-person shooter PC game released on April 12, 2004. It was published by DreamCatcher Interactive and developed by Polish game studio People Can Fly. It attempts to replicate the 'old-school FPS' gameplay of Doom and Quake. It has 24 levels of seemingly unconnected designs that include medieval castles, factories and lunatic asylums. Five of the levels are 'boss levels' with some of the largest FPS bosses to date. The game takes place in Purgatory and Hell.

Lastly, Painkiller ... has incorporated a unique help system into it’s gameplay that allows you to do things like increased health and half damage through the use of what is called “The Black Tarot”. The black tarot consists of cards that are collected from stage to stage if certain requirements are met. For example, one stage may award a black tarot card for simply killing all of the creatures or destroying all of the objects, while another may award the card for going through the whole stage using only one kind of gun. Either way, they do help out in a tough spot … but don’t think that you can just use them when you want. Having divine power will cost you, and the cost is in gold. Gold is picked up from destroying various objects like barrels or coffins in the stages, and you will have to pay a certain amount in order to activate the ability that you want to use.
