built 632 days ago
HYPOTHESIS: For most patients with chronic obstructive pancreatitis, distal pancreatectomy confers pain relief. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. Follow-up was complete in 80% of study subjects (mean follow-up, 6.7 years). SETTING: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS: Among 484 patients with chronic pancreatitis undergoing operation from 1976 to 1997, 40 with postobstructive chronic pancreatitis were identified. Criteria for selection included an isolated, dominant major pancreatic duct stricture or cutoff, changes of chronic pancreatitis in the distal pancreas, and ostensibly normal parenchyma without calcification in the proximal gland.

"This is a unique opportunity for physicians to treat patients with a single injection viscosupplement that offers a very good risk-benefit profile."

Recently announced data from an independent investigator's clinical study found Synvisc to be superior in magnitude and duration of pain relief, functional improvement and patient satisfaction to another viscosupplementation product in treating patients with OA of the knee. These independent data were presented last June at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) meeting in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and ... at the British Orthopaedic Association congress held this month in Glasgow.

"Visiting several physicians for pain relief should not open a patient's records to virtually unlimited access by the State," Mr. Schlafly argued. "The State violated the law here. Its search warrants should be quashed and their fruits excluded as a result."
