Pain Medication: Patients
built 261 days ago
Managing postoperative pain at the incision site during the first 72 hours after surgery often reduces the amount of narcotic pain medication required by patients, as well as the subsequent side effects associated with narcotic usage. Reduced pain can ... increase patient mobility and contribute to faster recovery and rehabilitation times. dj Orthopedics will market the new device in a convenient sterile kit throughout the United States and Canada where the Company has exclusive distribution rights for all surgical applications.
Ultram® (tramadol hydrochloride tablets) is a prescription medication indicated for the management of moderate to moderately severe pain. Ultram received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in March 1995. Tramadol has been prescribed in more than 55 million patients worldwide and Ultram has been prescribed in more than 21 million patients in the United States. Ultram is a centrally acting synthetic analgesic, not a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ultram has no anti-inflammatory activity and no potential for prostaglandin-mediated side effects. Unlike NSAIDs, Ultram does not have the potential to compromise the efficacy of certain antihypertensive agents (diuretics, beta blockers, and ACE-inhibitors).
Approved in September 2006, FENTORA is the first tablet formulation of the opioid fentanyl and the first new medication approved for the management of breakthrough pain in opioid tolerant patients with cancer since 1998. Its proprietary OraVescent(R) drug delivery system was developed by Cephalon subsidiary CIMA LABS. FENTORA is covered by patents until 2019.
When doctors limit pain medication, thousands of patients suffer needlessly, according to a number of studies. This quandary over the prescription of powerful pain relievers continues while investigators search for new ways to control pain. NIDA-funded researchers are spearheading the exploration for new painkillers that are effective but nonaddicting.

The MedFlo pump is an elastomeric infusion device that delivers a controlled flow of pain medication directly to a surgical wound site through a multiport catheter. Its constant flow feature provides physicians and patients with an effective, continuous method of post-operative pain control up to four days after surgery. MedFlo's targeted drug therapy delivers a local anesthetic, avoiding the side effects of oral or intravenous narcotic use like excessive sedation, nausea, respiratory depression and dependence.
In recent years, research has shown that doctors' fears that patients will become addicted to pain medication, known as "opiophobia," are largely unfounded. Studies indicate that most patients who receive opioids for pain, even those undergoing long-term therapy, do not become addicted to these drugs. The very few patients who develop rapid and marked tolerance and addiction to opioids are usually those who have a history of psychological problems or prior substance abuse.
