The researchers assessed baseline levels of depression among 322 African Americans and 318 Hispanics diagnosed with osteoarthritis and participating in two separate studies of arthritis pain medication. They determined the levels of depression using the PHQ-9, a screening tool developed by Pfizer. Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage, causing the bones to rub against each other. It can result in pain and loss of movement.
