After a discussion of Cubist style portraits by Pablo Picasso, students had the opportunity to create their own self portraits. Students drew on black paper (any dark color will work) - dividing the face to show multiple views and fracturing into shapes. Drawings were outlined with glue. After the glue was dry, students colored it with gold markers. Gold puffy paints can be used with similar results). Students colored their portraits with a limited color plan using pastels.

Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973) started to paint when he was eight years old. Like many children he would make drawings, but these were very different to today's children's drawings. According to psychology studies, by nature it's not a child's intention to accurately depict a natural object and today children are left to draw freely. When Picasso was young, children would be expected to try to draw as closely to nature as possible, just like mature artists would draw and paint, in the age preceding abstract art. From the age of five on, Pablo would get drawing lessons at school, in Malaga. Children were taught to make drawings based on simple geometric forms, to which more detail was added until an accurate image of the subject resulted.

Pablo Picasso, born in1881 in Malaga, Spain, lived a lifetime replete with artistic achievements until his death in 1973. Picasso's skill as a graphic artist spanned six decades, from the Blue Period etchings made when he was just 25 to his inspired use of linocut in his 70s, and contributed to his position as the greatest artist of the 20th century. In the 1940s Picasso began the association with Fernand Mourlot, who was to produce all his major lithographs. The directness of the technique lent itself well to portraits and ... allowed Picasso a greater scope to experiment, transforming one image to another on the plate. Picasso's interest in linocut sprang initially from poster design. While this exploration led to new possibilities, Picasso also discovered its technical limitations.
