Pablo Picasso: Artists
built 658 days ago
By 1936, the Spanish Civil War had profoundly affected Picasso, the expression of which culminated in his painting Guernica (1937, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid). Picasso’s association with the Communist Party began in 1944. From the late 1940s, he lived in the South of France. Among the enormous number of Picasso exhibitions that were held during the artist’s lifetime, those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1939 and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 1955 were most significant. In 1961, the artist married Jacqueline Roque, and they moved to Mougins. There Picasso continued his prolific work in painting, drawing, prints, ceramics, and sculpture until his death April 8, 1973.

In 1918, Olga and Picasso got married. The young couple moved to an apartment that occupied two floors at 23 Rue La Boétie, acquired servants, a chauffeur, and began to move in different social circles, no doubt due to Olga’s influence. The chaotic get-togethers Picasso had with his artist friends gradually changed into formal receptions. Picasso’s image of himself changed as well, and this was reflected in the more conventional style he adopted in his art and the way in which he consciously made use of artistic traditions and ceased to be provocative.

Madrid is honoring Picasso as well. Timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the return of “Guernica” to Spain, the Museo del Prado and the Museo Reina Sofía will jointly present, “Picasso: Tradition and Avant-garde” running from June through September. Focusing on Picasso’s important role in the history of art, the Prado will showcase an important group of the artist’s works offering a new perspective on his art. Picasso was the museum’s director during the Spanish Civil War and refused to have “Guernica” displayed in Spain during Franco’s time. The work was returned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1981. The Reina Sofía’s show will offer a different perspective, emphasizing the artist’s commitment to the world around him.

Picasso remained a prolific artist until late in his life, although this later period has not received universal acclaim from historians or critics. He made variations on motifs that had fascinated him throughout his career, such as the bullfight and the painter and his model, the latter a theme that celebrated creativity. And he continued to paint portraits and landscapes. Picasso ... experimented with ceramics, creating figurines, plates, and jugs, and he thereby blurred an existing distinction between fine art and craft.
