Ozark National Scenic Riverways is at its wildest and scenic best on the Jacks Fork from the Mo. 17 bridge crossing to Alley Spring. The Jacks Fork can be floated year-round if you have learned to "read" the water currents and are prepared to sacrifice some aluminum from your canoe to the underlying rocks. But spring is the best time of year to float for the water is up. There are only a few thin shoals where you will have to step out and lead your canoe; you can't portage.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways was created by an Act of Congress on August 24, 1964, to protect 134 miles of the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the Ozark Highlands of southeastern Missouri. The rivers are largely spring fed with seven major springs and an additional 51 smaller springs keeping the water clean, clear and cool. The clear waters of these two beautiful rivers provide excellent opportunities for john-boating, canoeing, swimming, fishing and tubing. Hunting is ... an authorized use within the Riverways' boundaries. The landscape is predominantly rural, with broadleaf forests and occasional open fields.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways can be explored any time of year. Mild winters offer quiet time on the rivers and trail with few visitors but ample opportunities to view wildlife. The spring is a beautiful time to canoe and camp on the rivers with warm days and comfortable nights. Summer is the busiest time of year but the cool spring fed water is refreshing on a hot day. The fall offers magnificent color as the leaves change and you’ll have the river mostly to yourself once again.
