Although there is no longer a railroad operating in the Owens Valley, you can relive some of the early railroad history at Laws Railroad Museum on Highway 6 about 4 miles north of Bishop. An original narrow gauge engine, the Number 9 Slim Princess is on view plus a museum and the 1880s Laws depot as well as some historic buildings moved there from Bishop. This is a three-dimensional perspective view of Owens Valley, near the town of Bishop, California that was created by combining two spaceborne radar images using a technique known as interferometry. Visualizations like this one are helpful to scientists because they clarify the relationships of the different types of surfaces detected by the radar and the shapes of the topographic features such as mountains and valleys. The view is looking southeast along the eastern edge of Owens Valley. The White Mountains are in the center of the image, and the Inyo Mountains loom in the background. The high peaks of the White Mountains rise more than 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above the valley floor. The runways of the Bishop airport are visible at the right edge of the image.

The bus pulls into the visitor center parking lot in Bishop, in the middle of the main (and only) drag in the largest and northernmost town in the Owens Valley. The passengers disembark for the brief walk to their motels, where despite the quantity of rooms in this relatively small town, reservations had to be made in advance, because this was, after all, the opening weekend of fishing season.
