Ovulation is a phase of the female menstrual cycle that involves the release of an egg (ovum) from one of the ovaries. New life begins if the ovum meets with a sperm during its journey down the fallopian tube. Ovulation depends on a complex interplay of glands and their hormones, and generally occurs about two weeks before the onset of the menstrual period. Typical ovulation symptoms and signs include changes in cervical mucus and a small rise in basal temperature. For most women, ovulation occurs about once every month until menopause, apart from episodes of pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, some women experience irregular ovulation or no ovulation at all.

Ovulation is the release of a single, mature egg from the ovarian follicle. The human ovary produces a multitude of ova during the course of a month, largest of which is expelled into the pelvic cavity and swept into the Fallopian tube. Ovulation does not follow a regular pattern between ovaries each cycle and which ovary releases the egg is fairly arbitrary. Once released, the egg is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 24 hours before it begins to disintegrate. If the released ovum or egg is fertilized and successfully implants, it results in pregnancy.

Ovulation refers to a specific phase in your menstrual cycle. Known as the ovulatory phase, it is during this time that your body releases an egg for fertilization. During the ovulatory phase, your body sends a series of signals that trigger an increase in the levels of estrogen in your body. In turn, this increase sets off a rise in luteinizing hormone (called the LH surge), a special hormone that helps you ovulate. When this LH surge reaches a certain point, one of your ovaries releases an egg. This egg will then travel down the fallopian tubes in order to be fertilized.

Ovulation - the maturing follicle prompts the release of higher amounts of oestrogen. The hypothalamus responds by secreting a chemical known as gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which makes the pituitary produce luteinising hormone (LH) and FSH. High levels of LH trigger ovulation within about two days. The mature follicle releases the ovum into the peritoneal cavity; it is then drawn into the open end of the fallopian tube. Small hair-like structures within the fallopian tube wave or ‘massage’ the ovum towards the uterus. Unless the ovum encounters a sperm within 24 hours, it will die.

The ripest egg is released into the pelvic cavity and swept into the fallopian tube. Which ovary releases the egg is fairly random. Ovulation does not necessarily switch between ovaries each cycle.

Ovulation induction is ... used in circumstances where the exact cause of infertility is not known. Endometriosis-associated infertility, not associated with anatomical damage to the fallopian tubes or surrounding structures, can also treated by ovulation induction. In such cases, the woman uses ovulation inducing agents to “superovulate” the ovaries, or cause multiple eggs to mature, instead of the one egg that usually matures per menstrual cycle. By combining superovulation with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) timed to coincide with ovulation, the sperm are given more “targets.” It is hoped that pregnancy will result because multiple, mature, and, perhaps, healthier eggs are available after superovulation. Though superovulation combined with timed intrauterine insemination does not guarantee that a woman with unexplained, mild male factor, or endometriosis-associated infertility will conceive in a given treatment cycle, the chance for pregnancy to occur is higher than the infertile woman’s background rate of conception.
