It is important to time intercourse at least 12 hours before ovulation. Sperm usually reach the fallopian tube and the egg within minutes after intercourse ... sperm need about 12 hours in your uterus before they can fertilize the egg in a special process called capacitation. This is the maturation process within the female reproductive tract by which spermatozoa become capable of fertilization. That's why the best time to make love is the day before and the day of ovulation

Do you know all you should about ovulation? Ovulation is the release of a mature egg. The egg travels to the fallopian tubes where it waits to be fertilized. The sperm is deposited in the vagina and "swims" upstream to find the egg. This whole process takes about 24 hours, so the sperm must be deposited at least a day in advance of ovulation.

This means that you don't have to time sex to the exact moment of ovulation to get pregnant. It is probably more realistic to think of a "fertile window" of about four to five days when live, healthy sperm could meet a freshly ovulated egg.
