Ovulation: Pregnancy
built 634 days ago
After ovulation, the luteal phase begins. During this time, the leftover egg follicle turns into the corpus luteum, and releases both estrogen and progesterone in order to prepare for pregnancy. If you do not become pregnant, the corpus luteum dies, and you will begin your period.
Elevated levels of prolactin (Hyperprolactenemia) can ... cause irregular ovulation. Prolactin stimulates milk production in a pregnant female and this phenomenon is partly responsible for the myth that a breast feeding female cannot become pregnant. Hyperprolactenemia is elevated levels of prolactin in the absence of pregnancy and is usually caused by a small benign tumor at the base of the brain. This condition is treated medically with bromocriptine (Parlodel) or surgically by removing the tumor.
Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum, which is the structure formed by the follicle after ovulation. After a pregnancy has been established, progesterone is produced by the placenta. Levels of progesterone rise after successful ovulation and this hormone functions to prepare the endometrium to thicken and become more vascular to accept the developing embryo. Low levels of progesterone may indicate that ovulation did not occur or it could signal that a "luteal phase defect" is present.

Breeding up to 6 hours post-ovulation will typically result in similar pregnancy rates as would be seen with pre-ovulatory breeding. Breeding after 6 hours post-ovulation may see a slight decline in pregnancy rates. Breedings more than 12 hours post-ovulation will produce a decrease in pregnancy rates and an increase in early embryonic death rates;
