Ovulation is regulated by a complex system of hormonal and chemical secretions from the ovaries, the hypothalamus (part of the brain), and the pituitary gland (the master gland, which controls most hormonal secretions). Ovulation and menstruation begin during puberty, which usually occurs between the ages of 9 and 14, and continues every month (except during pregnancy) until menopause (around age 50).

There are several other medications that are used occasionally to induce ovulation. Among these would be a new therapy using Metformin. This drug is helpful in certain patients who have a tendency toward diabetes and have an excess in male hormones, giving them the condition of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Occasionally, these patients will require the lowering of their excessive male hormones by medications such as Prednisone. Often times, this is enough to allow patients with PCOS to ovulate on their own. In other cases, the Prednisone or Metformin will allow for a much better response to drugs such as clomiphene citrate.

The processes involved in ovulation include the initial production of FSH to stimulate follicular development. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) which travels to the pituitary where it stimulates the release of FSH. FSH stimulates and supports egg development within the ovarian follicles. As the eggs mature, they produce estrogen which helps stimulate endometrial development. Estrogen levels are monitored by the hypothalamus and FSH production is adjusted accordingly. During this time, progesterone is produced to help support endometrial development.
