Outkast, one member of which is a self-described player and the other a poet, is an anomaly in popular music. Innovative, street-savvy rappers, the duo's appeal cuts across all borders, even within the feudalistic, highly competitive world of hip-hop. Dre and Big Boi's spectacular success as artists not only lies in their ability to pioneer new sounds with each recording, but in accepting their different personalities and building on their common interests — a shared love of Parliament/Funkadelic, James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix.

Outkast's fourth album, Stankonia, is a far more complex effort than the critically acclaimed Aquemini. While Aquemini dealt with Big Boi and Dre's -- the self-described "player and poet," respectively -- contradictory personalities, Stankonia addresses the contradictory impulses of hip-hop itself.

Outkast originates from Atlanta, Georgia and consists of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton and Andre "Dre" Benjamin. The duo were signed to LaFace Records just out of high school and released their first single "Player's Ball."

Andre and Big Boi started as friends in High School and gained more respect for each other by rap battling one another and eventually formed Outkast. Just before High School graduation Andre and Big Boi were approached by Organized Noise Productions but decided not to sign. Shortly after graduation Big Boi and Andre signed to Babyface’s label La Face Records as "Outkast." Outkast debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" was released in April 94' and by April 95’ was certified platinum. In 1995 Outkast was ... named the best new rap group at the source awards. From there on out Outkast success has excelled as they have hit the billboard charts with every album produced with there name on it. Outkast unlike most rap artists tend to switch up their style with each album to keep each one different from its predecessor. Almost no two song styles are alike with beats changing in and out of almost every song; they are definitely in a league of their own.
