Otto Preminger: Jean Seberg
built 634 days ago
Bunny Lake is Missing Otto Preminger's film noir of love, money and murder centers on Diane (Jean Simmons), a femme fatale who is looking for someone to take the heat when her stepmother dies in a mysterious accident. That someone is Frank (Robert Mitchum), a man whose life is thrown into chaos the moment they meet. Reader review
Even in Anatomy you can see the crucial Preminger subject at work: love as an expression of power over people - or dictatorship. It's there in Laura, in another noir love story, Fallen Angel, and in Daisy Kenyon, where Joan Crawford has to resist two men trying to control her. It's ... there in two stunning pictures about the way the emotional unilateralism of a young woman destroys those around her: Angel Face, with Jean Simmons and Robert Mitchum, and Bonjour Tristesse, with Seberg, David Niven and Deborah Kerr.
Jean-Luc Godard had always been a great fan and took key motifs from Preminger pictures he adored, but he never reviewed any of them for Cahiers as he did those of Hitchcock or Ray. The result is that one of the best critical essays ever written on Preminger came very early on in the journal from Jacques Rivette in his brief 1954 review of Angel Face.
