The Ottawa Senators returned to the NHL and to Ottawa in the 1992-1993 season. The original Senators used to play between 1901 and 1934. They are the reigning Eastern Conference champion, having defeated the Buffalo Sabres in the 2007 Eastern Conference Final of the National Hockey League playoffs, but lost in five games to the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup finals.

On April 29, 2006, the Ottawa Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, four games to one. Ray Emery became the first rookie goalie since Philadelphia Flyers’ Brian Boucher in 2000 to win a playoff series.

The new Senators played their first game on October 8, 1992, in the Ottawa Civic Centre against the Montreal Canadiens with lots of pre-game spectacle.[9] The Senators would defeat the Canadiens 5–3, one of the few highlights that season. The club would tie with the San Jose Sharks for the worst record in the league, winning only 10 games with 70 losses and 4 ties for 24 points, one point better than the NHL record. The Senators had aimed low and considered it a success. Firestone had set beating the old record the Senators' goal for the season, as the team planned to finish low in the standings for its first few years in order to get high draft picks.[10] GM Bridgman was fired after the season and team president Randy Sexton took over GM duties.
