Montag (Oskar Werner) is a fireman in this future - a man whose job it is to incinerate books and the property of those who read them. The movie’s title plays off this, as Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper catches fire. In this vision of the future, firemen are the executive watchdogs of an all-controlling culture that does not allow the written word and marks offenders as first-degree criminals. One day, on his way home from work, Clarisse (Julie Christie) approaches Montag and questions him about his profession and the damage it causes on society. She gives herself away as a reader and challenges Montag to decide on the evils of reading for himself by experiencing it firsthand. Montag, intrigued by the rebellious Clarisse and the thought that there might actually be a better life to be found in the books, steals a book from one of his jobs and begins reading it at night.

Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) come from different countries, but there is a bond between them as artists and friends that exists and is very strong. If that bond weren't as powerful as it was, their friendship might have fallen apart when fate threw a beautiful woman in their collective path. This woman is fun, wild, and very attractive and right off the bat both men fall helplessly in love with her. This could cause a rift between some friends, but Jules and Jim seem to kick back and let the good times roll. While one is sure to have his heart broken, the two don't allow competition to enter into the relationship too much. Soon enough the woman, Catherine (Jeanne Moreau) falls in love with Jules and the two become married after some time.

Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim were born to be friends, and as young men in Paris they lead lives of charm and freedom. After giving up on professionals, Jules believes he has found his ideal girl in Therese (Marie Dubois), first seen painting an anarchist slogan on a wall and then being slapped by her boyfriend "because people will think anarchists can't spell." Therese is the girl who creates the famous moment of the "steam engine," popping the lighted end of a cigarette into her mouth and blowing smoke out the other end. When Jules discovers she is not, after all, his perfect mate, his explanation to Jim is a masterpiece: "She was both mother and daughter to me."
