Though the 42-year-old Osama bin Laden never lived in Wadi Doan, he absorbed his fundamentalist views on Islam from the strict Wahhabi form of Muslim beliefs prevalent in this region. Wadi Doan is part of Yemen's remote hinterland that has been a stronghold of Muslim militants for some time.

[One] of bin Laden’s “mentors” at this time is Abdul Mejid al-Zindani, a dynamic mujaheddin recruiter who becomes a leader of Islah. Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Saleh’s half-brother and military commander Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar ... recruited anti-Soviet mujaheddin fighters for Bin Laden. These fighters will later establish training camps in Yemen.
