Orville Moody: U.S. Open
built 222 days ago
Since 1960, only six players have made the U.S. Open their first PGA Tour victory: Jack Nicklaus (1962), Lee Trevino (1968), Orville Moody (1969), Jerry Pate (1976), Ernie Els (1994), and Retief Goosen, (2001). Nicklaus and Pate were U.S. Amateur champions. Goosen and Els had almost a dozen wins around the world before they won the U.S. Open, and Trevino became one of the greatest players in the world. Of the six, Moody, who ... won the U.S. Senior Open, was the only one who wasn't that great of a player. The point is, look for a big name to win this week at Pinehurst.

Rachel Doerr, Head of Sporting Memorabilia at Lyon and Turnbull said, “Orville Moody was the winner of the U.S. Open in 1969 and was one of the great unsung golfers of his era. He could easily have passed as just another golfer who never won a major but history on this occasion gives a full record of his achievement.”
Orville Moody-Jimmy Powell: Moody, nicknamed "Sarge" for his service in the Army before playing professional golf, won the 1969 U.S. Open and the 1989 U.S. Senior Open, and they remain his only victories on the two Tours. Powell won four Senior Tour titles.
