The 1996 Orlando Magic were a better team than the one that reached the NBA finals in the previous year, unfortunately for them, so were the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls, led by a rejuvenated Michael Jordan swept the Orlando Magic in the 1996 Eastern Conference Finals. Shaquille O’Neal left the Magic for the Los Angeles Lakers during the off-season and the Magic dynasty was over before it every got off the ground. The Magic would miss the playoffs 2 times in the next 4 seasons and slowly but surely dismantle a truly magical team.

The Orlando Magic had a better season compared to others in recent years. With the development of Dwight Howard continuing and Jameer Nelson stepping up at the point guard position, the Orlando Magic is looking better at two vital positions. They already have their big man ready to go and Nelson has come into the league out of nowhere averaging nearly 15 points 5 assists a game. The Orlando Magic’s season, which saw better play from its players in the past, wasn’t always on the bright side.

The Orlando Magic joined the NBA in 1989 as an expansion team. The Magic won only 18 games their first season but steadily improved over the next four seasons with hard nosed play solid draft picks. Prior to the 1993/1994 season, coach Matt Guokas stepped down as head coach and Brian Hill replaced him. Hill led the young Magic team to their first playoff spot in 1994. The Magic won their first division title in 1995 under Coach Brian Hill. The Magic were loaded with great young talent like Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant and Dennis Scott.

Brian Hill was confident from the start that the massive center the Orlando Magic drafted out of Louisiana State University in 1992 had the potential for greatness. Hill, the Magic’s coach then and now, remembers being amazed by all of the intangibles Shaquille O’Neal possessed when he entered the league. The size. The agility. The charisma. The dominant game.

The Orlando Magic's history was altered with the 1992 NBA Draft. They selected Shaquille O'Neal for the team from Louisiana State University. He towered over the rest with a height of over 7 ft. His height proved advantageous, and he had an immediate impact on the team. The Magic once again claimed their NBA spot as the most improved franchise. O'Neal ... earned All-Star starter status, as well as 1992-1993 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
