Google’s social network Orkut is usually noted as being “really popular in Brazil” and not much else. However, the site has recently been surging in Asia as well, and Google has in turn started put more resources into it, and is rumored to be working on an API to allow developers to build applications for the site.

Google’s Orkut social network, which has been having a bit of a renaissance this year, has been down for the last thirteen hours as of 2 am PST. It’s unlikely this is an upgrade given the amount of time the site has been offline. This just isn’t Google’s day.

Talking about Orkut surging in Asia, it is almost a cult figure in India. Every young person seems to be on it. No wonder why it was crowned the 2007 Pepsi and MTV Youth icon recently. Then there are Orkut horror stories and Orkut oppositions by political parties.

The Orkut concept is on the rise and it appears that MySpace may very soon have a competitor on a larger scale. The ironic aspect is that this market is largely untapped. There are truly a whole lot of marketers that have tapped into this venue, but not nearly the number that keep banging away at MySpace on a daily basis. Perhaps it is time to consider the shortcut to successful marketing that goes by the title of Orkut.

Many other sites have been published in Iran since Orkut's blockage, using the same social-networking model - examples include MyPardis, Cloob and Bahaneh. Of course, these websites run a high risk of being blocked as well, so they have their own censorship policies to meet Iran's unwritten regulations and rules of filtering.

The interesting part of Orkut is the idea of trust-metrics, not the one security folks think of in PKI, but the idea of belonging to a group by having its members rank you. See these articles:
