[One] most important feature of Orkut is communities, on the lines of message boards or forums related to a specific subject. Orkut has over a million of communities that target different people from all over the world to share a common goal or aim in life. Anyone with an Orkut account can create or join an existing community. These communities range from food lovers and beauty to fan clubs of actors, stock tips, business networking etc. There are several hate-communities or Orkut too. The motive of Orkut communities is to socialize people and allow them to share their views on a common topic, have a debate, discuss business issues or just have fun and play games.

People often forget to mention that Orkut was becoming EXTREMELY popular in America in its early days before Brazilians invaded and took it over. They utilized so much bandwidth that it became almost unusable during certain hours of the day (page errors, very slow), not to mention the general annoyingness of Brazilians who lack any amount of netiquette.

Orkut can be developed into an effective tool in management, poliical movements and community building. But it seems that it is not able to provide service for as many people who amy would like to be involved in it. The system is down most of the time and this will result in a draw back.
