Orkut: Friends

You missed the most important one about why Orkut is popular in Brazil and not elsewhere. The reason is the same: it is because there are Brazilians there. A connected Brazilian almost cannot not be on orkut, because all your friends are, and that is how your junior high buddies reconnect with you. Also, Brazilians scared everyone else away because of volume and the others gave up since they didn’t feel very comfortable (Brazilians didn’t feel the need to make anyone else comfortable).

Forbes -- ...Social networking Web sites like Friendster, Orkut and LinkedIn hit the hype stratosphere last year, pitching their ability to find one a mate or a job. But a more sensible business idea is to sell the Web idea as software to companies to figure out who knows whom, and how well, to close more deals. Why cold-call when someone you know can introduce you? New firms like Spoke Software in Palo Alto, Calif. and Visible Path in New York City let you search address books, in-boxes and call logs of employees, investors, lawyers or anyone you consider part of your company's ecosystem.

Orkut is similar to Friendster by Microsoft, and it is made like a small community of family, friends, or random people. It is recommended by the companies to be the age of 18 or above to accept these invites, because sometimes these sites involve sexual relationships, or adult related relaionship. However, there will be no inappropriate content on the sites, so it is not "restricted" to people above the age of 18 (although Friendster does restrict a drinking age in the terms and conditions.) I've never used Orkut, but I find that it's a pretty interesting service, and that it's suitable for a family, a group of friends or a community like this one. that's why some people might not want to invite strangers etc.)

On September 4, 2007, Orkut announced another new feature. You can now see an "Updates from your friends" box on the homepage, where you'll get real-time updates when your friends make changes to their profiles, photos and videos. Moreover, in case you want to keep some things on your profile private, Orkut has added an easy opt-out button on the settings page.
