On November 12, 2004, Orbitz was acquired by Cendant's Travel Distribution Services division, and is part of the Consumer Travel Americas group (Wikipedia, 2005). At the end of 2004, the Chicago-based company had approximately 400 employees. Mike Sands serves as President of Orbitz.com, overseeing the management and strategic direction of the company (Orbitz, 2005).
Orbitz was originally started in 2000 when five major airlines - American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United - came together to fulfill a mission: Develop a travel website that would serve people better. The site launched on June 4, 2001.

The second fastest growing winter beach on Orbitz's list, Daytona's 23 miles of sandy beaches offer many on- and off-the-beach activities for families. On the beach, there are water sports, a scenic boardwalk and of course, plenty of sand. Off the beach, families should be sure to visit Angell and Phelps Chocolate factory for a free tour. This short tour gives a history of chocolate making and offers free samples at the end of the tour. Any trip to Daytona would be incomplete without a trip to the Daytona International Speedway. Home to the Daytona 500 experience, this interactive attraction is fun for the whole family and is sure to make a NASCAR fan out of anyone who visits.
Global distribution system operator Worldspan and Cendant subsidiary Orbitz last month filed lawsuits against one another in developments that could result in a severed relationship. Worldspan currently processes many Orbitz transactions as part of an agreement running through 2011, though Orbitz parent Cendant ... owns Worldspan GDS rival Galileo.

Orbitz brushes aside such concerns. After delays in its launch last year, it's aggressively pushing ahead, promising to deliver great deals. With the battle just beginning, this summer may be the perfect time to buy cheap tickets.
