Gallarus Oratory is the most perfect example of the boat shaped oratories associated with the Dingle peninsula. The Walls are built of sandstone are 1.2 metres thick and the East wall has a round headed window. Internally the oratory measures 4.65 metres x 3.1 metres. At the side of the Northern wall is a leact and Cross-Slab. The cross-slab stab is 1.1 metres high x 0.3 mertres thick and stands at the east end of a rectangular bed of stones.

Gallarus Oratory is without doubt the main attraction in Dingl Island ! It is a tiny church dating back to the 6th century and it was built like a boat standing upside down. There is no seperate roof, but the walls are meeting on top and all of the stones were perfectely set togeather without any kind of a cement. There is just an open door at one side and a tiny round window at the other side of the building. Get inside of the tiny church, and you will see that wind and rain have NO chance at all to get inside these perfect walls - it might even be a good idea to find shelter there in case of a sudden rainfall, like they happen quite often in Ireland. The monks ... left a small cemetary and on my last picture you may see the most beautiful tomb of it. You may park your car only on a small car-park next to the oratory, and you have to pay a small fee for the parking.

The Oratory has an impressive wine list and the wines are sold at wine shop retail prices, not the normal restaurant prices. They start at £10 per bottle for Vina Sol and Norton Malbec. This must be the best value in London!

The Oratory was founded in England by Cardinal Newman in 1847. Converted in 1845, he went to Rome in 1846 and with the advice of Pius selected the Oratory of St. Philip Neri as best adapted for his future work. After a short novitiate at Santa Croce he returned in 1847 with a Brief from Pius IX for founding the Oratory. He established himself at Maryvale, Old Oscott, where in 1848 he was joined by Father Faber and his Wilfridian community. After a temporary sojourn at St. Wilfrid's, Staffordshire. and Alcester St., Birmingham, the community found a permanent home at Edgbaston, a suburb of that town in 1854.
