Winfrey publishes two magazines: O, The Oprah Magazine and O at Home. She has co-authored five books; at the announcement of her future weight loss book (to be co-authored with her personal trainer Bob Greene), it was said that her undisclosed advance fee had broken the record for the world's highest book advance fee, previously held by former U.S. President Bill Clinton for his autobiography My Life.[21] In 2002 Fortune called O, the Oprah Magazine the most successful start-up ever in the industry.[22]

When you’re hand-picked by Oprah to host your own talk show, that’s a sure sign of success, right? Viewing audiences will get the chance to decide for themselves next fall, when Rachael Ray begins hosting a daily one-hour talk show. King World Productions inked the deal with Ray in association with Oprah’s Harpo Productions and Scripps Networks.

The popularity of Winfrey's show skyrocketed after the success of The Color Purple, and in September 1985 the distributor King World bought the syndication rights to air the program in 138 cities, a record for first-time syndication. That year, although Donahue was being aired on 200 stations, Winfrey won her time slot by 31 percent, drew twice the Chicago audience as Donahue, and carried the top ten markets in the United States.

Winfrey has committed to stay with her daytime show--which has outperformed every other syndicated talk show in television history--at least through the 2004 season. In a press release, Winfrey noted, "I am finally at a point in my life where I'm doing the kind of shows I've always wanted to do, helping people see themselves more clearly and to make choices that lead to more fulfilled lives. We're still running on." In 1996 and 1997 she was third on the Forbes list of the world's highest-paid entertainers, after grossing a combined total of $201 million, and in 2001 she was listed among the 10 most influential people in publishing. In 2001, with an income of $900 million, she placed 280 on the Forbes list of the 400 richest people in America.
