Winfrey has recently exerted political influence, endorsing presidential candidate Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. This is the first time she has publically made such an endorsement. Winfrey will hold a fundraiser for Obama on September 8 at her Santa Barbara, CA estate. [66]
This is not the first time Winfrey has been on hand to talk truths with Aniston. She shared a champagne toast with Winfrey as the first guest to kick off Oprah's 20th season in September. And in addition to the inevitable chat about Jen's divorce, it was ... revealed that the actress and some other friends had spent time at Winfrey's home for a girls-only gabfest.

On September 16, 1996, Oprah announced the start of Oprah's Book Club, an on-air reading reading club. Since then, Oprah has inspired the country to get excited about reading again. Each of the books selected for Oprah's Book Club to date has become an instant bestseller averaging over a million copies sold per selection. In 1997, Oprah was named Newsweek's "Most Important Person" in books and media, and TV Guide's "Television Performer of the Year." She was ... awarded a People's Choice Award for "Favorite Television Performer."

In June 2003, the book club re-emerged with a different tactic: instead of making overnight successes out of contemporary authors, Oprah would encourage people to read classics. Recent selections include East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. In September 2005, she returned to contemporary literature with James Frey's memoir A Million Little Pieces, though in 2006 controversy arose regarding that author's truthiness.
