One of the key features of Oprah Winfrey's television persona is that her own private life has been an essential element of her talk-show format of public therapy. Her poor black background and her past and current problems with child abuse, men, and weight have made Oprah an exposed public personality on television and have allowed her loyal audience to feel that they "know" her quite well. This televisual familiarity is part of the power of Oprah Winfrey.

Despite numerous obstacles in her life, Oprah Winfrey has become one of the most popular media personalities of all time. From humble beginnings Oprah moved to Chicago in 1983 to host a local low rated morning show called AM Chicago. Her first airdate was January 2, 1984 and in the short span of a few months, AM Chicago went from worst to first in its time slot. It actually became the highest rated show of all time in that time slot. The Phil Donohue show, which is ... filmed in Chicago, had held the top spot but was not match for Oprah's charm and warmth.

Winfrey's life under her father's care was purposeful and disciplined. A barber, an elected city councilman, a grocery store owner, and a deacon in his church, Vernon Winfrey was a high achiever who expected responsible behavior from his daughter. Gone were Oprah's days of heavily applied make-up, revealing dresses, and broken curfews. She was expected to maintain top grades. Zelma Winfrey took her to the library every two weeks, where she had to choose five books, read them, and then write book reports for her family. Vernon rightly viewed education as the key to success, and Oprah clearly reaped the benefits of his guidance.
