According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the careless handling of champagne is one of the most common causes for holiday-related eye injuries. These injuries are often caused by improperly opening the bottle, as a champagne cork is under 90 pounds of pressure — three times the pressure inside a car tire. So, before you break open a high-pressured bottle of bubbly, it’s important to know the proper technique. After 125 years of producing premium California champagne, Korbel Champagne Cellars is the authority on entertaining with bubbly. By following these simple tips, you can open the champagne bottle like a pro — without injury or spillage.

The Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Research Center (OVSRC) is the research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh. The OVSRC is comprised of scientists representing distinct basic science and clinical disciplines who are engaged in research with the common goal of understanding the visual system and the diseases that compromise its function. These scientists work side by side with departmental Ophthalmologists who are conducting clinical trials. The mission of the OVSRC is to (1) apply state-of-the-art basic science to the advancement of vision research; (2) use of ocular models of normal and diseased states to elucidate basic scientific concepts; and (3) train the next generation of scientists and physicians through involvement in mentoring of graduate and medical students and residents.

The Department of Ophthalmology maintains an extensive laboratory research program in the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Laboratory, the Harold S. Larkin Eye Research Laboratory and The Larkin Family Eye Research Laboratory of the Boston University School of Medicine. These facilities ... house a Practice Surgery Suite, providing residents with hands-on training in highly technical, microsurgical ophthalmic procedures such as phacoemulsification. The Suite allows residents to develop familiarity with surgical techniques and instrumentation before entering the Operating Room, and to hone their skills during the course of surgical training. The Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Laboratory also houses the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, where residents receive their instruction in this discipline.
