The Ontario government is increasing the maximum monthly social assistance rates by 2% for recipients of benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and Ontario Works (OW). The increases come into effect in November and December, respectively, and they apply to all basic needs allowances, shelter, board and lodging rates. Northern allowances, and special allowances paid to people in certain institutions and guide dog users. The 2% increase ... applies to Back to School and Winter Clothing Allowances for eligible recipients with children under the age of 18. Families receiving assistance under the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities program (payable to a parent with a child with a severe disability) will see the maximum monthly allowance increase from $400 to $410 per month, a 2.5% increase.
The previous Ontario government's support for university research in Ontario was inadequate. Cutbacks to university operating grants dramatically affected the research capacity of Ontario universities. Their share of federal research funding declined from 45% in the mid-1980s to approximately 38% today. A decade ago, the Ontario government provided funding for 20% of universities' basic research costs. This has declined to 15%. In comparison, competing US states cover 50% to 120% of universities' basic research costs.

The Government of Ontario provided a significant contribution to the project through the Forest Sector Prosperity Fund. The municipality of Fort Frances provided great support at every phase of the project, notably facilitating the necessary zoning changes. "A collaborative spirit made this project a reality and so very much reflects the shared commitment of all stakeholders. This simply would not have been possible without everyone's extra efforts and support," concluded Alain Grandmont.
The Ontario government will invest $17,500 to help the City of Elliot Lake and its partners develop a business action plan for economic development. The project will identify and resolve issues relating to business retention and expansion, and provide community support for local businesses.
Once an application for a licence has been received by the government, a notice is distributed to all industry partners (Ontario Dairy Council, Dairy Farmers of Ontario, etc.) asking them for comment on the application. All parties have the opportunity to either support or oppose the application. Based on the comments received, the Director of the Food Industry Branch may elect to call a hearing to provide all parties with the opportunity to formally present their arguments. Upon completion of the hearing the Director will indicate when his/her decision on the application can be expected. Regulation 761, Section 100 outlines the reasons why the Director may refuse to issue or renew a licence for the operation of a plant.
