In the 2004 Ontario Budget, two initiatives were announced to promote the commercialization of publicly-supported research, in keeping with the orientation of the previous government, and the Federal government. A new Ontario Research Commercialization Program allocated $27 million over four years to help public research institutions, including universities, colleges and hospitals, identify discoveries with commercial potential. The Budget ... provided a maximum of $36 million, through the Ontario Commercialization Investment Funds Program, to leverage up to $120 million in seed capital for spin-off technology companies created by faculty, staff and students.

In its May 2004 budget, the Ontario government announced that physiotherapy, optometry and chiropractic services would no longer be covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for budgetary reasons. The recent announcement means that the Government has made special provision for continued funding for routine eye exams for many patients and has increased funding for many physiotherapy patients, while completely eliminating funding for chiropractic patients on December 1, 2004.

The government is committed to protecting the legislated employment rights of Ontario’s most vulnerable workers by dealing with the backlog of claims they have filed under the Employment Standards Act. This Budget provides anadditional $3.6million annually to address thebacklog of uninvestigated complaints. The result will be improved frontline service and shorter claims-resolution times.
