Online holiday shopping continues to grow, with online consumer spending topping $28.2 billion during the November -- December 2005 holiday season, a 25 percent increase from the same period in 2004 (1). The first Monday after Thanksgiving, dubbed "CyberMonday," has emerged as the day when most online purchases occur.

LEXINGTON, Mass., Nov 27, 2007 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Blockbuster outlasted 63 of the largest online retailers (1) in the finals of Gomez's four-week "Merchant Madness" tournament (2), a battle for retail website performance supremacy over the holiday shopping season. Blockbuster's website withstood five rounds of competition and performed better than finalist Overstock in yesterday's final Cyber Monday round, the busiest online shopping day of the year when more than 70 million people shopped online. During the contest, Blockbuster's website outperformed head-to-head opponents including CDW, Best Buy, HP, Dell and Zappos. Overstock beat IAC, ShopNBC, Nordstrom, J.C. Penney and REI.

In the U.K., online Christmas shopping is already well underway, with cyber shopping traffic up 23 percent in the third week of November versus the shopping activity in the base month of October. Christmas shopping in France started more slowly, but is beginning to gather pace and grew by 18 percent over October's level in the third week of November. German activity was actually 10 percent lower than in October caused in part by the trade union strikes in the transport and service industries that are currently affecting the German economy as a whole.

As online shopping kicks into high gear on Cyber Monday (a term coined by the National Retail Federation for the first Monday after Thanksgiving), productivity in the workplace may be impacted. CareerBuilder.com's survey found that nearly a quarter (24 percent) of workers who holiday shop online expect to spend two or more hours doing so this year. Thirteen percent plan to holiday shop online for three or more hours while 5 percent anticipate spending five or more hours.
