In October, Intertainer, with nearly 150,000 broadband subscribers, closed its service, citing litigation with the movie studios. A month earlier, it had filed a federal antitrust suit against AOL Time Warner, Sony, Universal and Movielink, charging the studios with engaging in a conspiracy to inhibit its business by withholding licensing deals. Intertainer does not plan to reopen until the litigation is resolved.

The feature, called “Previews,” consolidates all available movie trailers in one area on their site. Netflix's recommendation engine selects the appropriate trailers and calculates the order in which they are shown based on a subscriber’s rental and rating histories with the service. The previews run sequentially and without interruption. Subscribers can then add movies to their rental queues directly from the "Previews" page.

Since introducing PC-based movie watching last year, the company had taken a "metered" approach to the feature, offering, in essence, an hour per month of instant watching on a PC for every dollar of a subscriber's monthly subscription plan. For example, for subscribers on the popular $16.99 plan, which provides unlimited DVD rental with three discs out at a time, subscribers received the added benefit of 17 hours a month of movies and TV episodes watched instantly on their PCs.

"Our research has shown that Blockbuster Total Access appeals strongly to online customers as well as to store-based customers who want to be able to rent movies both ways," said Antioco. "As a result, we believe Total Access will help us achieve our goal of two million subscribers by year-end, position us to grow our subscriber base in the future and assist us in increasing our share of the overall rental market."
