Online Games: Number
built 629 days ago
With growing numbers of players, it becomes more difficult to maintain social order in online games due to the large amounts of information and freedom that are given to the players. Even though there are many online rules that are already established, wherever there are people, there are conflicts, and this requires governance.
Eve_online_screen2 Games wise, the usual suspects were the biggest sellers. The various SingStar titles sold by the truckload, though the PS3 iteration remained merely a steady seller. The delightful FIFA 08, and the rubbish Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 ... sold in hefty numbers, as did the PS3 Tomb Raider-a-like Uncharted as word spread of its absolute genius. The various Guitar Hero iterations shifted in ridiculous numbers too, particularly at its cheap price point.
Other games will feature a single universe which is divided among servers, and requires players to switch. Still others will only use one part of the universe at any time. For example, Tribes (which is not an MMO) comes with a number of large maps, which are played in rotation (one at a time). In contrast, the similar title PlanetSide uses the second model, and allows all map-like areas of the game to be reached via flying, driving, or teleporting.
Eve_online_screen2 Facebook games will remain as little more than intensely budget pastimes, unable to evolve beyond bedroom programming. Not that there’s anything wrong with bedroom programming, which has itself been responsible for a more than significant number of truly brilliant games, but there is ... an undeniable appeal in the bigger budget efforts involving teams of talented people working towards one goal. While Facebook applications could be a great testing ground for new ideas, without real fiscal incentive or reward, they can’t hope to evolve much further than their current rudimentary status and are destined to sink into insignificance at around the same time as Facebook inevitably will – just as soon as we all start signing up to MybookSpace or Facebebo or whatever.
