This course was created by Pacific EMPRINTS, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Anthropology. Development of the course was aided in part by Alan Katz, MD, MPH, Sean Doyle, BA, and Anna Daddario, MSW. The literature reveals that one of the most important factors of student motivation and success online is contact with the instructor and interaction with peers. This case study examines the effects of both instructor and student verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors in an online undergraduate technical writing course at a medium-sized university. Using both qualitative and quantitative data, results indicated that chronemics (temporal immediacy) and social presence were contributing factors in student achievement and satisfaction in an online learning environment. Applied Photovoltaics Online Course, CPVE UNSW There are no prerequisites for this course... it is recommended that participants of the engineering strand have a firm grasp of 2nd year university level mathematics. In prior similar courses over 30% of those without this mathematical bases failed to complete the course. Those interested in participating in the course without this mathematics background should seek advice by email apvsc@unsw.edu.au. The minimal-mathematics strand requires periodic essays rather than solved equations. Both strands use the same course materials.

Even universities that sell an ALN course in one discipline may contract to purchase an ALN course in another discipline. The main reason will be the need to fill gaps in curricula with more courses than can be feasibly developed and delivered by resident faculty. Current gaps will be more visible as online education opportunities become more popular due to a wide array of specialty courses not presently found in most traditional curricula.
