Oni's success can be credited to an independent publisher who has recognized that the future of comics lies in the book format. "In the future," Rich said, "there's going to be a shift to the graphic novel—especially for indies. There's more interest in the complete one-story volume. Oni is a third-person 3D action/adventure that emphasizes hand-to-hand combat as well as gunplay. Inspired by anime classics like Ghost in the Shell and action thrillers like La Femme Nikita, you play Konoko, an elite agent on a quest to infiltrate and destroy a ruthless crime syndicate. You?ll fight through levels designed by architects, including a monstrous underground research facility and a towering 15-story police station.

Oni's second poetry manuscript, Spring, was selected by Mark Doty as a winner of the 2007 National Poetry Series Open Competition. Her book will be published by the University of Illinois Press in August 2008. The book will include an auto-run CD of the Flash animation of Oni's kinetic poem, "The Mandrake Vehicles," currently displayed online at Conduit literary magazine.

The First Oni fell and died in the Twilight Mountains. Its blood drained into the mountains, Tainting the iron within. Many years later, the Boar Clan settled the mountains and lived there until the Tainted ore was used to create the Anvil of Despair, onto which the entire clan was sacrificed.

Oni makes up for the absence of a coherent storyline with the addition of a nifty little objective proximity icon at the bottom of the screen. It indicates both the altitude and direction of your objective targets, and it makes it possible to ignore the plot and concentrate on Oni's strongpoint: action.
