The telecoms sector in Oman is relatively undeveloped for the region and for the GDP per capita. This situation has begun to change, with the introduction of some competition in the market, but much potential remains. Both fixed-line and mobile telecoms penetration levels are low but since the launch of second mobile operator Nawras, mobile subscriber growth has increased rapidly. Strong growth rates have ... been recorded in the broadband market, from low levels, as incumbent OmanTel prepares for further competition. This report provides an overview of the telecommunications market in Oman, accompanied by relevant statistics.
With more than 350 varieties of coral Oman can offer equally rewarding diving experiences as any of the other main destinations. The warmth of the water makes for comfortable diving with sea temperatures similar or higher than those found in the Caribbean, Maldives, Malaysia etc. Oman is still an undiscovered diving paradise, and particularly at the Dimaniyat Islands there are rarely more than two or three diving boats to be seen. As such there is more opportunity to enjoy the sea life – the turtles, leopard shark, eagle rays and sting rays are constant companions without the crowds of divers found at the more popular destinations such as Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.
noframe Driving around Oman in your own (rented) car is quite easy. A six-lane superhighway connects Muscat and Nizwa and a similar road between Muscat and Sur is under construction. When that road is ready, travelers should be aware that the old dirt road is extremely scenic and a fun ride and should not be missed. If you intend to drive in wadis (unsealed valley roads in river beds) a 4WD is highly desirable, though experienced drivers will usually manage with a normal car quite well (although rental companies may not be impressed with the state of the car after such an expedition and you are likely to void the insurance by taking it off-road). But you can never be sure how the road will be and if it starts raining the wadis will turn into rivers quickly.

The Sultan's Palace in Muscat Oman is famous for its khanjar knives, which are curved daggers worn during holidays as part of ceremonial dress. Today traditional clothing is worn by most Omani men. They wear an ankle-length, collarless robe called a dishdasha that buttons at the neck with a tassel hanging down. Traditionally this tassel would be dipped in perfume. Today the tassel is merely a traditional part of the dishdasha.
Oman did not confine its exports to raw frankincense, or olibanum. By blending this with a form of tallow, it was possible to process it into incense for religious rites. Ivory and perfumes were ... among Oman's exports during the Neolithic Period. Investigative surveys stumbled on a quantity of Sumerian tablets bearing the name bokhur (incense) and records have described bokhur as "extracted from the frankincense bush".
