Oman: Arabian Gulf
built 656 days ago
In the 16th century AD, Oman was invaded by Portuguese troops, who were vying for control of the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Their occupation lasted around 150 years until they were finally expelled by Sultan bin Saif al-Yarubi in 1650AD, the date which most consider to be the start of Oman's complete independence. The following Ya'aruba Dynasty brought a new-found renaissance to the country and it was during this time that many of the decadent forts and castles were built, some of which are still standing.

Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman since 1970, extends some 1,000 miles along the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, on the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. Approximately 118,000 square miles, it has a population of 2,018,074 (1993 census). Oman's long-disputed southern border with Yemen and its western borders with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and the maritime northern border with Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, have all been largely negotiated and demarcated.

Oman is the charming, sleepy neighbour to Dubai’s life in the fast lane. Sinbad’s Arabia. Occupying the south-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman has over 2100km of coastline stretching along the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman.

The terrain of Oman is varied although most of the country is desert. The Indian monsoon rains, as they pass over, provide enough moisture for the Dhofar Mountains to be green five months of the year. Oman's high mountains and long beaches make it very different from the other Gulf States.
Oman's flag is comprised of three horizontal bands of white, red, and green of equal width with a broad, vertical, red band on the hoist side. Centered at the top of the vertical band is the national emblem in white -- a sheathed khanjar dagger superimposed on two crossed swords in scabbards. The peaceful and tranquil Sultanate of Oman occupies the south-east part of the Arabian peninsula facing on to the Indian Ocean. This geographic location has long given the sultanate a natural proclivity towards trading with the African continent, as well as serving as an entry point for visitors to Arabia.
