The Earthtimes In its fourth year, the Olympus BioScapes competition is the world's premier platform for honoring images and videos of plant, animal and human subjects as captured through light microscopes. Any life science subject is eligible, and entries are judged based on the science they depict, their aesthetics (beauty and impact of the image), and their technical merit. This year, in addition to Prizes 1-10, 63 other images and movies were recognized with honorable mentions. All images and the names of all honorees may be viewed online at http://www.olympusbioscapes.com/.

Olympus EVOLT E-500 with 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 lens & 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 lens - Top With a width of 5 inches and a basic weight of 15.3 ounces, the Olympus Evolt E-500 is one of the more compact digital SLR cameras available, but its sturdy plastic body doesn't feel cheap. As with most SLRs, an array of buttons and dials are spread about the body, but the general design is logical and easy to understand after a few uses. The camera's right-hand grip allows for an easy hold, but the contoured thumbrest on the upper-right side of the body's back isn't as generous as those on some similar SLRs.
Olympus Stylus 790 SW The Olympus 790 SW has an improved movie mode at 640x480 @ 30fps, adds Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment Technology, and a more practical Mode Dial. It handles well and, though the buttons are on the small side, they are easy enough to operate. [Those with large hands may want to try it out first.]

The Olympus digital camera models described in this section are not designed to use TWAIN drivers, plug-ins, or mini-programs to communicate with the computer. Therefore, Windows does not supply drivers for these cameras. The Olympus Camedia utility software communicates with these camera models to download or copy your picture files into a folder on your computer hard disk where they can be accessed by any software program, including the Image Preview program in Windows that uses Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) or Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) formatted graphic files. When you use the following cameras, you must use Olympus' own Camedia software for these cameras to function:
