As part of World Sight Day celebrations, Special Olympics and Lions Clubs International launched a ‘Global Vision Care Curriculum’ in Hyderabad, India. The curriculum presents state-of-the-art science and clinical practice guidelines for quality diagnostic and vision care services for people with intellectual disabilities, who do not receive regular or appropriate vision care.

For a $20 donation to Special Olympics, customers will receive their choice of a free or greatly discounted handset. In 2007, through grants made at the store-level, Wal-Mart and its Foundation gave a total of nearly $1.2 million to support Special Olympics programs in the communities where it has a presence. Wal-Mart is recognized as one of the leading employers of disabled people in the nation. In 2007, Wal-Mart was recognized for the fourth year in a row as one of the "Top 50 Employers" for providing a positive working environment for people with disabilities according to a poll sponsored by Career and the disABLED Magazine. Fifty-two percent of all Special Olympics athletes have jobs and many are employed at Wal-Mart stores, reports the Special Olympics.
This global partnership will enable Special Olympics to expand its youth programs to every continent as well as create the largest global corporate volunteer team in the history of the Special Olympics movement through the creation of Team Mattel. Thousands of Mattel employees in nine international locations, including China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Europe and the U.S., will be active participants in local Special Olympics activities. From providing water to athletes at track meets, lacing skates, scorekeeping at basketball tournaments, coaching and providing encouragement and cheers at the finish line, Team Mattel volunteers will be the global corporate support network for Special Olympics participants.

Jonathan Jayne, who was featured extensively on Seattle auditions last week, apparently was an active participant in the Special Olympics. That in and of itself fueled criticism that “Idol” is picking on the mentally challenged. Jayne, who recently appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show, has apparently reveled in the attention. And the Special Olympics just released a press release supporting him and the show:
