The Olympic Games began with religious sacrifices and choirs singing. City-states from all over sent choirs of young men to sing in the choir competitions. Most of the spectators were men too. Married women were not allowed to watch the Olympic Games, and it is hard to imagine that very many men chose to bring their young daughters.

After all nations have entered, the president of the host country's Olympic Organising Committee makes a speech, followed by the IOC president who, at the end of his speech introduces the person who is going to declare the Games open. Despite the Games having been awarded to a particular city and not to the country in general, the Opener is usually – but not always – the host country's Head of State. So it is this Opener, in turn, who formally opens the Olympics, by reciting the formula:

Women's field hockey first appeared at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. The The Netherlands women have won the most medals with three, including a gold medal in 1984, while the Australian women own the most gold medals after winning the 1988 and 1996 Olympic tournaments. The United States women qualified for the Games in 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1996, and won the bronze medal in 1984.
