San Francisco’s Olympic Club, founded in 1860, is the oldest operating athletic club in the western United States. Hornberger + Worstell has been entrusted to restore the club’s status as one of the finest athletic clubs in the world. A 110,000 square foot addition, completed in 2004, is designed to serve as interim quarters during the reconstruction of the club’s landmark structure, built in 1910. The through-block expansion on a steep site in San Francisco required sophisticated programming of the relationships among the club’s many highly specialized spaces, which include a thoroughly restored historic natatorium, banquet and trophy rooms, and entry hall.
The Olympic Club is the nation's oldest athletic club (est. 1860). Located in southwest San Francisco, its 45 holes of championship golf on 365 acres of rolling hills between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean have hosted multiple USGA championships, including four U.S. Opens and two other U.S. Amateurs, plus numerous PGA Tour events. Finlen and The Olympic Club will host the U.S. Open again in 2012.

Stanford grad Tom Watson looked like a winner as he took a one-stroke lead into the final round of the 1987 U.S. Open, the last time this country's national championship was held at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Watson... bogeyed three of the first five holes on the final day and wound up in a five-way tie for the lead after making par at No. 6. Watson surged into a one-stroke lead over Scott Simpson while the rest of the field did a disappearing act. The two traded leads until Simpson took it for good with a 15-foot birdie put on No. 16. A magnificent bunker shot saved par on No. 17, which proved to be the deciding margin when Watson missed a tough birdie putt on No. 18 to tie. Recent Stanford products like Casey Martin, Tiger Woods and Joel Kribel don't remember much about that '87 tournament, which had a purse of $868,605.
