Born in Sherman Oaks, California to David Olsen and Jarnette Fuller, the Olsen twins started their acting careers on the television series Full House in 1987. Hired at the age of five months, filming began when they were seven months old. The show was widely popular during the late 80s and early 90s, and both sisters played one character, Michelle Tanner, taking turns during the tapings to do so, in order to comply with strict child labor laws regarding child actors. Because the producers did not want viewers to know that Michelle was played by twins, the sisters were originally credited as "Mary Kate Ashley Olsen", but later credited as separate people. During the eight year run, Mary Kate and Ashley made several straight to video movies such as To Grandmother's House (1992)

The identical twins alternated in the role of Michelle Tanner, reportedly because working full days while simultaneously abusing cocaine would have been too demanding for the young children. Full House was cancelled in 1995, and without a TV show to occupy their time, the Olsen twins were able to increase their output. They had already released several direct-to-video hits, and started two popular video series, "The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley", with the twins as kid detectives who would "solve any crime by dinner time", and "You're Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley's [Birthday Party, Mall of America Party, etc.]". Their feature films, It Takes Two and New York Minute, have been bombs in theaters, but the real money came when they were released on video. Two subsequent sit-coms, Two of a Kind and So Little Time, were quickly cancelled, and at 17 the twins seemed wooden co-hosting Saturday Night Live. But nothing yet has slowed the Mary-Kate and Ashley juggernaut.
