The first Oktoberfest, USA, was held on October 13, 14, and 15, 1961...but the planning began many months before. In early 1960, civic leaders had agreed that La Crosse needed a community wide activity of some sort. The city had been without such an event since 1921. Because that earlier celebration had been a winter carnival, many of the leaders were in favor of renewing this idea as a La Crosse tradition.

The very first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810. It was held to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (King Ludwig 1) to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The wedding took place on October 12th, and a great horse race (in celebration of the marriage) was held a few days later on October 17th. The marriage was celebrated annually, and came to be known as Oktoberfest.

A true example of the Oktoberfest style should have a toasty malt accent with a subtle hop balance. Good Oktoberfests are not hoppy beers. That said, many brewpubs produce their own versions of Oktoberfest beers that stray from the classic parameters. Hoppy, ale-like Oktoberfest beers are not unknown, and while they would be an affront to a Bavarian reveler they have their place among US fall seasonal beers.

The almost unbelievable growth of Oktoberfest, USA, since that first year has made reality of all the objectives. It was conceived as a holiday for the community and accepted by the community on those terms. In 1962, the name "Oktoberfest" was registered with the State of Wisconsin. In 1963, "Oktoberfest, USA" was registered and listed as a trademark with the federal government. In 1965, the newly-formed La Crosse Festivals, Inc., purchased the assets of Oktoberfest from the Chamber of Commerce and became the sponsoring organization.

Oktoberfest is sponsored by Copper Village Museum and Arts Center. A fun filled day begins at 10:00am with and arts and craft show at Copper Village, 401 E Commercial St. in Anaconda. There will be a Farmer's Market in the adjoining park. German sausages, potato salad, kraut, hot rolls and other wonderful food will be available all day. There will be a beer garden and entertainment in Friendship Park. Free children's craft area.
