Oj Simpson: Las Vegas
built 198 days ago
For the second time in 12 years, former NFL star OJ Simpson faces a lifetime in jail after being charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and six other offences. Police allege Simpson led an armed hold-up of sports memorabilia collectors at a Las Vegas hotel. Simpson has insisted he was merely retrieving items that had been stolen from him. Attorney Yale Galanter confirmed that Simpson was released on $125,000 bail.

Simpson's trial was a huge media event, lasting eight months and covered at length daily. Americans were introduced to a parade of colorful characters, including Lance Ito, the judge of questionable competence; Kato Kaelin, Simpson's lazy houseguest; and Johnnie Cochran, his slick defense lawyer. When prosecutors asked Simpson to try on the killer's gloves, he couldn't squeeze his hand inside, and it was Cochran who famously quipped, "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit". Curiously, in the course of their "investigation", detectives had obtained samples of Simpson's and the victims' blood. This is, to say the least, not proper police procedure. When asked on the witness stand whether he'd planted any evidence to frame Simpson, LAPD Detective Mark Fuhrman invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself. Simpson was acquitted, and vowed to devote his life to finding the real killers.

Guide Note: OJ Simpson's bail has reportedly been revoked and he is on his way back to Las Vegas. Simpson allegedly violated his terms of freedom by attempting to contact his armed robbery co-defendants. A hearing was held on January 16, 2008 in which his $125,000 bail was doubled to $250,000.

In January 2008, Simpson was taken into custody in Florida and flown to Las Vegas, NV where he was jailed for allegedly violating the terms of his bail by attempting to contact Clarence "C.J." Stewart, a co-defendant in a trial in which they are charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, coercion and conspiracy to commit crimes. District Attorney David Roger of Clark County, Nev., provided District Court Judge Jackie Glass with data that Simpson had violated terms of bail. The hearing on this bail issue was on January 16, 2008. Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass raised Simpson's bail to USD 250,000 and ordered that he remain in jail until 15% of the bail, in cash, was paid.[29] The kidnapping charge could land Simpson in prison with a life sentence with parole, and the robbery charges, if convicted, carry mandatory prison time.[30]
